The father of the child, Daniel Pinney, 26, is dead after an officer involved shooting in Calais Wednesday night.
Detectives believe Pinney confronted Megan Sherrard, 21, in a Doctor’s office parking lot and forced her to return with him to his home on Main Street.
Calais police officers John Preston and Joseph Bartlett entered the home and shot at Pinney, just as the mother and baby were fleeing.
Pinney was killed, Sherrard and her son, 6-week-old Luca, are being treated at Eastern Maine Medical center for gunshot wounds. The 6-week-old was shot in the foot.
Officer Preston has been treated and released from Calais Hospital.
Public Safety Spokesman Steve McCausland said this isn’t Pinney’s first run in with the law. He was arrested on May 18th for a domestic violence criminal threatening charge.
Sherrard filed that report and had a protection order against Pinney.
McCausland said Sherrard and her son were scheduled to go to a doctors appointment on Wednesday, but never showed up.
Thursday morning, the police tape had been removed and investigators had left the seen, but the town is still shaken up.
Joseph Goulette witnessed the scene from the Irving gas station across the street. “There’s a lot of people in this area. It’s pretty nice. We had a lot of people coming in all shocked that someone could get shot in their neighborhood.”
One neighbor tells TV% he heard 6 gunshots go off rapidly, but that was the only gunfire he heard.
Another man who’s lived on the street his whole life says he hasn’t heard of anything like this happening in the area in over 50 years.
State police said they can’t release any more information at this time, expect that the investigation is centered on the shooting of the mother and baby.
The Attorney General’s Office has taken over the investigation.
An autopsy on Pinney’s body will take place Friday at the Medical Examiner’s Office in Augusta.
